The history of autonomous aircraft systems over the past 70 years is traced leading up to the technology that formed the foundation of current operational aircraft. The resulting architectures that are currently employed are reviewed. Looking to the future, the development of autonomy for aircraft has taken on a new direction and will be influenced heavily by commercial sector developments.
Doug Fronius is a director and sector chief engineer for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, responsible for all sector aircraft programs. In this role Fronius provides the technical leadership of numerous contract and company-funded conceptual and development programs covering both manned and autonomous flight vehicles. Fronius earned a bachelor of arts in music and a bachelor of science in aeronautical engineering from San Diego State University.
