Job Overview

Summer Internship

PROJECT TITLE:

CommunityCrit: An Online Platform to Support Large-Scale Feedback Exchange on Urban Design Proposals

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

We seek interns to work with Prof. Steven Dow, Prof. Don Norman, and postdoc Narges Mahyar to design, develop, and test an experimental platform for large scale civic engagement. Our goal is to build an online platform, CommunityCrit, to get people’s feedback on urban planning proposals. To get valid feedback from people who are not familiar with Urban Planning and critical design constraints we need to author a set of evaluation criteria. Individuals provide their feedback based on provided rubrics, then they get exposed to others feedback. This project centers around 2 main goals 1) to provide structured descriptions and rubrics to help people understand a complex map-based proposals 2) to maximize engagement by pushing people to tasks based on their interest, expertise, location, and previous contributions.

For this project we will be working closely with a team of experts who have been running face to face workshops to get people’s input on the 14 street promenade project in downtown San Diego.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong background in web scripting languages (i.e. javascript, HTML)
  • Understanding of JSON, online database handling and querying
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices (e.g. unit testing, code reviews, design documentation)
  • Familiarity with principles of web-design and graphic design
  • Strong attention to details and solid communication skills

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience in D3, or Vega, and Vega-lite is a plus
  • Experience with language topic modeling (e.g, TF-IDF) is a plus

This is an unpaid internship; however, arrangements can be made to earn academic credit as an ECE 199 or CSE 199 (Independent Study) course, which can be used towards satisfying technical electives. Also, if students' skills are satisfied enough, they can have a chance to attend several Hackathons with other undergraduate interns.

For this project, it is recommended that students have:

  • Experience using development boards, such as the Dragonboard 410c, Raspberry Pi, chipKIT, etc.
  • General programming knowledge, especially in C/C++ and Python 2/3
  • Ability to implement circuit components and I2C’s
  • Familiarity in receiving and sending data over serial communication
  • Basic knowledge of networking, such as sending data to/from the TCP and HTTP/2
  • Basic experience in using and navigating through BASH (command line shell)
  • Special programming knowledge such as NodeJS, AngularJS, Google's material design, Unity, and so forth
