Bachelor's/Master's Program

Undergraduates in the ECE department who have maintained a good academic record in both departmental and overall course work may apply to the B.S./M.S. program.Acceptance into this program is an honor which carries with it practical benefits, one of which is the simplification of the graduate application process (no GREs are required). In addition, advanced students have access to graduate level courses and opportunities to do graduate level research under the direct supervision of UCSD's faculty before completing their bachelor's degree. 


  1. Application. Complete and submit the Internal Application 
    ** Students should apply no later than the fourth quarter prior to the receipt of the bachelor's degree: i.e. have at least three quarters remaining in the bachelor degree program. Exceptions or extensions to the application deadlines will not be considered.
  2. Statement of Purpose. An applicant's statement of purpose is very important and helps provide a student "voice" in the application process. Please be concise and specific as possible in preparing your statement. Provide information that will aid the Admissions Committee in evaluating your potential as a Master's student, particularly in relation to your goals, experience, and professional growth. Applicants are recommended to include information about internship/work or research/project experience.   3. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required and one must be from an ECE faculty member. It is important that the letters of recommendation be completed by individuals who are in a position to analyze your ability and academic promise.
    **Each letter of recommendation must be submitted along with a Waiver of Access Form.

Students should submit an application for the B.S/Master's program by the program deadline during the spring quarter of their Junior Year. To be considered a competitive applicant, students must have a 3.4 minimum GPA overall and major. However, as this program is highly competitive, meeting or exceeding these minimum requirements does not guarantee admittance to the program and a higher GPA is typically necessary to secure admission.

Spring of Junior Year - Submit application

Mid-July - Admission decisions released

August-December - If accepted by the department, students will be required to fill out the UCSD Graduate Application Online and pay the $80 application fee ($100 for International Students). If admitted by ECE Department in July, this application will be automatically approved.

Please note: The CE major can only be selected at the time of application/admission to UCSD. Changing/transferring into this major will not be allowed.



Once admitted to the B.S./M.S. program, students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in all courses through the winter quarter of the senior year and in addition must at all times maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their graduate course work. Students not satisfying these requirements may be re-evaluated for continuation in the program.

Admission for graduate study through the B.S./M.S.  program will be for the M.S. degree only. Undergraduate students wishing to continue toward the Ph.D. degree must apply and be evaluated according to the usual procedures and criteria for admission to the Ph.D. program.

Students in the B.S./M.S. program must complete the same requirements as those in the regular M.S. program. Completion of the M.S. degree requirements within one year following receipt of the B.S. degree will generally require that students begin graduate course work in their senior year. Students must have received their B.S. degree before they will be eligible to enroll as graduate students in the department.
