2017 IEEE ICASSP Best Student Paper Award

Piya Pal

Graduate student Heng Qiao received the Best Student Paper Award (first place) at the 42nd IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) 2017. The paper is titled:

Heng Qiao, Piya Pal, "Unified Analysis of Co-Array Interpolation for Direction-of-Arrival Estimation", Proceedings of the 42nd International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2017.

The ideas behind this paper originated in Prof. Pal's prior and ongoing research on sparse samplers and co-array based signal processing, which provide a powerful way to solve inverse problems in imaging. This paper presents an important result that develops a unified framework for analyzing the performance of any co-array based algorithm. The result also has fundamental connections to mathematical problems that arise in high-resolution optical imaging (such as phase retrieval and super-resolution imaging) and can shed new light on their performance limits.
