Abstract

Overview of silicon photonics activities at the RWTH Aachen aimed at datacom and life science applications. In particular, recent progress will be covered on wideband, resonantly enhanced high-speed modulators and semiconductor mode-locked laser based WDM transceivers aimed at short distance communications. In a different application space, we have also been working on visible wavelength multi-color laser engines with silicon nitride PIC technology for fluorescent microscopy and cytometry. Finally, as an outlook, the ongoing work on the integration of group IV light sources based on the SiGeSn material system will be presented.

Seminar Speaker Bio
Jeremy Witzens is a Full Professor at RWTH Aachen University where he holds the Chair of Integrated Photonics. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Center of Digital Photonic Production, recently funded by the German Federal Government and the State Government of North-Rhine Westphalia with 55 Million Euros. He was this year’s General Chair of the IEEE Conference on Group IV Photonics and has been the recipient of a career award by the European Research Council. Prior to joining the RWTH in 2011, he has been a Principal Research Scientist at the University of Washington, Seattle Campus, and a Senior Staff Engineer at Luxtera Inc., one of the first companies to introduce Silicon Photonics transceivers on the marketplace. He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 2005 and his Engineering Diploma from the Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, in 2000.
