Scope of Position:

  • Early stage development of electronic circuits and systems for the Corning Optical Communications business
  • Project leadership including coordination of development efforts with a focus on electronic product development
  • Demonstration of new technologies and processes to drive business growth

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Design of analog and digital electronics utilizing circuit simulation software
  • Specification of passive / active components and integrated circuits (ICs)
  • Multi-layer Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design using layout software
  • Development of data acquisition and automation control equipment
  • Define, order, and procure materials and components for prototyping
  • Hands-on circuit / system assembly and testing to verify performance
  • Analyze test data and document results in technical internal reports
  • Documentation of test procedures, experiment plans, and process changes
  • Improve existing laboratory process capabilities and measurement equipment
  • Document new processes and provide related cross training
  • Failure analysis and root cause identification for components and assemblies
  • Participate in teams to solve problems and improve processes using structured problem-solving methods and statistical tools
  • Lead projects and teams in support of department objectives
  • Present periodic project reviews and obtain sponsor approvals
  • Measure and communicate performance against established objectives
  • Communicate results to the project team in both verbal and written forms
  • Collaborate with both internal and external resources to leverage expertise
  • Coordinate third party suppliers to drive completion of project goals
  • Benchmark existing technologies to identify potential business opportunities
  • Electronic design support for other development projects

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 10% travel depending on the project
  • Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
  • 40 hours per week with overtime as needed Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm Flex-time is supported

Required Skills:

  • Electronic circuit design for both analog and digital applications
  • Strong experience with circuit simulation and PCB layout software
  • Hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of electronic circuits
  • Programming skills for automated data acquisition and image processing using software such as LabVIEW and MATLAB
  • Experience with automation control utilizing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of Firmware, Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)
  • Design, assembly, and testing of RF / Wireless circuits, systems, & networks
  • RF antenna design, specification, and performance knowledge
  • Understanding of optical fiber and related communications systems
  • Familiarity with optical connectors and related cable assemblies
  • Knowledge of optoelectronic devices and systems

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in Electronics Engineering or equivalent, advanced degrees are preferred
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
