Optional Practical Training

What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a type of employment authorization for F-1 students. It is an opportunity to pursue a 12-month period of work experience in your major field of study. The authorization can be used for a paid position located on-campus or off-campus, both before (Pre-Completion OPT) or after completion of course requirements (Post-Completion OPT).

See ISEO's website for more information about OPT and how to apply for this opportunity.

How long does it take for an OPT to be processed?

Once an OPT iPortal request is submitted, it will get routed to the ECE Department for review. It takes 3-5 business days for the department to process your iPortal request. After it is approved, it will be routed to ISEO for further review and your new I-20 will be issued.

See ISEO's OPT I-20 request guidelines for more information on how to submit an OPT iPortal Request.

See ISEO's OPT I-20 FAQ page for more information on the initial OPT, STEM OPT Extension, Maintaining Status on OPT, USCIS Processing and Other Issues.
