I-20 Program Extension

What is an I-20 Program extension?

If your I-20 (F-1 students) or DS-2019 (J-1 students) will expire soon and you need additional time to complete your academic program, you must apply for a program extension at least 10 days before the program end date listed on your documents. Failure to extend your I-20 or DS-2019 in a timely manner may cause immigration issues, so please act accordingly.

See ISEO's website for more information about extending your program and how to apply via iServices.

*Please note that this is for students who need to extend their program due to extenuating circumstances or whose I-20 expires prior to their 6 quarter time limit.*

How long does it take for an I-20 extension request to be processed?

Once an I-20 extension iServices request is submitted, it will get routed to the ECE Department for review. It takes 3-5 business days for the department to process your iServices request. After it is approved, it will be routed to ISEO for further review and your I-20 will be issued.

ECE M.S. Students Transferring to the ECE Ph.D.

ECE allows a 1 quarter program extension for ECE M.S. students transferring to the ECE Ph.D. program. This means that instead of completing the M.S. program in 6 quarters, students must complete all M.S. degree requirements, including the capstone (thesis, comprehensive exam, or preliminary exam), by their 7th quarter.

Students requesting this extension must submit an I-20 extension before the current I-20 end date. As part of the process, the student's Ph.D. research advisor will be contacted to confirm the transfer to the Ph.D. program.

ECE M.S. students who are interested in transferring to the ECE Ph.D. program must read and follow the instructions outlined on this page
