Medical Devices & Systems

The Electrical and Computer Engineering department is advancing the Medical Devices and Systems (MDS) Intiatitve, a strategic effort to strengthen collaboration between ECE faculty and the UC San Diego medical community. Research in medical devices and systems in inherently multidiscipilinary, drawing on experise across sensors, circuits, signal processing, imaging, robotics, communiciaitions, machine learning, and integrated systems. ECE faculty are developing technologies for wearable sensors, cancar detection, chronic and infectious disease diagnostics, clinical imaging, and anatomical and digital pathology, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, remote monitoring, and connected health systems.

The intiative builds on active collaborations with physicians, clinicians, biomedical researchers across UC San Diego, as well as the region's strong biotechnology and medical-device ecosystems. By connecting engineering innovation with clinical needs, the MDS Intiative aims to accelerate translation from laboratotry prototypes to clinical evaluation and real-world healthcare applications. MDS is an important theme in the department's roadmap, with the broader goal of enabling more effective, accessiable, and afforable healthcare technologies.
