Professional and Technical Electives are an integral part of the ECE major curriculum. They allow students course flexibility as well as the unique opportunity to tailor their major to their personal interests and professional goals. Generally, electives are upper division, 4 units and passed with a C- or better.
Keep in mind:
- Enrollment and course offerings depend on respective departments’ schedules, prerequisites and policies.
- Course offerings are subject to change.
- Students are expected to complete prerequisites prior to enrollment in the courses. Please follow all department policies.
- ECE graduate classes may count towards elective requirements. 290, 298, 299 or graduate level seminars will not count as either professional or technical elective credit.
- If a course is not automatically listed in your degree audit, please contact the ECE Undergraduate Advising Office through the VAC: vac.ucsd.edu to update your degree audit.
- 195 (Undergraduate Instructional Apprentice) is not an acceptable elective.
- 1 unit courses taken P/NP and seminars are not acceptable electives.
- Major requirements cannot overlap with each other. If a course satisfies a core major requirement, it cannot count twice and satisfy an elective requirement (Professional, Technical, CSE or ECE Electives, Open Electives).
Acceptable electives per major:

- Professional Electives
- Technical Electives
